i got off my nut at Oasis... this is what I learnt

Floating in the clouds. Near the Gods. touching distance.

blasting my body with alcohol and cigarettes

Gallagher Gods blasting cigarettes and alcohol

Our Master Plan. Soho Soup. early doors. pints.

Little By Little, pints.

Oasis Orgasm: pending.

Wembley:: crowds:: walls of wonder, Wonder Wall floating through the ether.

Just demolished the most fucking splendidly superb night at Oasis.

It made me think…

What’s the most crowded category of all time?
What’s the highest failure rate category of all time?
What’s the category where it’s nigh impossible to differentiate yourself?

The music industry.

LITERALLY everyone fails

(I tried my hand as a WHAM! cover artist under the retrospectively-rather-fitting-name “WHACK!” at Tequila Tony’s” in Alicante… couldn’t get it going…alas, started the podcast)

How many amazing musicians have you heard in pubs. Or clubs. Or bars. That didn’t make it.

(Especially at Tequila Tony’s, Alicante).

Guarantee you, there’s hundreds of thousands out there who are as good as Lennon or Gallagher or McCartney - but didn’t know how to position themselves correctly.

(Especially at Tequila Tony’s, Alicante).

Why?

Yes, in part, it’s down to raw talent.
Yes, in part, it’s down to a relentless work ethic.
Yes, in part, it’s down to a smidge of luck.

But, it’s also down to brand positioning.

The Greatest Brands of all time are Rock Bands.

The Beatles had George Martin and Brian Epstein to correctly position them.

The Beatle’s haircuts was the greatest Purple Cow move of all time. Their hair zigged, when everyone else zagged.

The Rolling Stones has the greatest brand logo of all time.

Noel Gallagher talks on an interview with Ricky Gervais that “Wonderwall” and “Don’t Look Back In Anger” were “mass market” songs built on universal truths.

Challenger brands can learn tonnes studying the greatest bands of all time.

OASIS Brand Strategy 101.

“You Need To Be Yourself You Can’t Be No One Else”

Maybe the greatest brand positioning line of all tine?

This reminds me of the amazing episode with strategy-sensei, Alex Smith.

On the poddy, Alex said the greatest definition of brand strategy is by Dolly Parton.

“Find Out Who You Are, Do It On Purpose” - Dolly Parton

Yummy.

Dolly jives and snogs and canoodles extremely nicely Liam and Noel “You Need To Be Yourself You Can’t Be No One Else”

How to be “yourself” as a brand?
How to find out who you are, to do it on purpose?

Highly recommend podcast with Alex Smith below.

biggest learning: Unique Points of Difference > Unique Points of Disagreement

”Brands aren’t built, they’re felt” - David Hieatt

Oasis logo is kinda-dog shit.

But the palpable feeling at Wembley was a huge reminder that the best brands are a FEELING.

Brands aren’t built, they’re felt.

SOOOO FOKIN’ GOOD R’ KID.

Good Brands: focus on packaging to win that first, second, third purchase.

Great Brands: do the above + AND focus on the feeling.

You can have great packaging, with a great rate of sale, and great distribution, but that doesn’t mean you’ve got a Great Brand.

A business is NOT a brand.

Great Brands go further, they focus on the feeling.

Focus on Little Things = Big Feelings.

At Oasis Gig, it was reversible bucket hats.

Little Things = Big Feelings.

BOTIVO’s matches are a darling example.

How deliciously wonderful?

Nothing is Truly Original Fake It Till You Make It vs. Make It To You Make It

People who focus solely on “Fake It Till You Make It” are thick.

People who focus solely on “Make It, Till You Make It” are thick.

You must do both simultaneously.

To get anywhere, you’ve got to “fake it till, you make it” - to smash through imposter syndrome and self-doubt.

Buuuutttt…

You must ALSO “make it, till you make it” to build enough evidence to know you are, who you say you are.

By “make it, till you make it” it allows you to find your own voice and originality.

Oasis started covering The Beatles.

Liam Gallagher’s “original” style is a blend of John Lennon and Johnny Rotten from the Sex Pistols. Liam called his son Lennon.

look similar, eyyy?

And, guess what chiefs?

John Lennon wasn’t “original” either. John used to relentlessly cover Buddy Holly and The Crickets.

Buddy Holly and The Crickets inspired the name The Beatles.

Also notice “Peggy Sue”… inspiration for infamous Peggy Goo.

the lessons:

  1. nothing is truly original.

  2. steal, then make it your own.

  3. literally everyone you hold in high regard is completely winging it.

  4. different inputs = different outputs. Weird is a good indication for great.
